For over 30 years, I owned and operated a custom woodworking shop located in the Fort Point Channel area of South Boston. I made furniture, cabinetry and displays for private and commercial residential spaces, offices, and retail stores. I designed and made everything: coffee tables, chairs, entertainment centers, wood wall treatments, executive desks, credenzas, conference tables, bedroom sets, elevators, bars and kitchens—even an ark for a temple. I also created wooden educational toys, mirrors, desk accessories and wooden art.
At times I employed 20 people making high-end wood product, and I had a great time teaching them, supervising them and working alongside them. For many years, I worked alone or with one or two helpers. I setup my shop for a functional workflow (and then moved and setup it up again), maintaining and using every piece of equipment that a shop needs to take rough stock and make finished pieces.
My work history included stores #2 through #46 all over the country for Brookstone Company in the late 1970s through mid 1980s: wood-wall packages, displays at cash counters and windows, point of purchase, signage and lighting fixtures with glass and Plexiglas work inside and out, and all other wooden fixtures. All jobs were completed, delivered, and installed on time to high precision.
I started with a Bachelor of Science, Electrical Engineering (B.S.E.E.) from City College of New York, and worked for nearly two years in industry on circuit boards, and then life opened an opportunity to escape that headache and find woodworking.
